Schaffas and we're smirking..

We created and finished 3 schaffas ( the ancestors or original smirks) and sent them off for the charity auction by screamdance.com

Here's their Blurb.

Schaffa 1. "Ballerina. ( I used to be a ballerina, but now I wear my tutu on my head)".
The Ballerina came about after wondering how to re-design, re-cycle and re-use a plastic piece of Xmas waste from the "dollar shop". a pair of pliers and a hammer is all it needed.

Schaffer No. 2. "The removalist. It fell on my head and it's stuck there."
Stuff in life oftens happens by accident, and this little cave man is just keeping on - keeping on..
In fact he was too big to sit on the little bench from the op-shop,
so he carries it on his head instead.

Schaffer No 3. "Waltzing matilda - Since he jumped into the waterhole, I have to be his minder."
This started out as a pond for a doll's house garden, then it was accidently
placed on the schaffer head.. well, as usual one thing leads to another..
Someone's got to carry the can..or the pond.. or whatever it is.
Don't they? "

The original schaffer - forerunner of a smirk

A smirky smirk is not just about the object.

A Smirky-Smirk should be funny, or at least a take on trends, or society.

The photo of the smirky smirk should have a humorous blub attached to make you think, question, imagine, create, and share.

It can't be rude or offensive, that's why smirky-smirks are non sexual beings.

The smirky smirk can only avert it's eyes or look elsewhere. It can't give its opnion or judgement.

It's whole existence is to make you laugh, or chuckle, or just smirk.

"the first mother smirky-smirk looked a bit like a crab who had lost several of her legs, and her hair had become a haven for her little smirks who were perched on her head. The problem for mother smirk was that the baby smirks were always hungry and snatched her smirk food from her smirky mouth before she could remove her smirk and put it in..her smirk was soon inverted"

I'm a smiling smirky smirk

Creativity begins with a blank page. Ideas don't always materialize straight away.
For me, creativity is often sparked by an idea, a picture, a natural object.

Recently I saw a tv program on "close the gap" which is a philanthropic organisation dedicated to helping close the poverty gap between aboriginal and white societies.
It had some big sporting names and heaps of public servants irrelevant white paper pages.

I nearly gave up looking. BUT THEN I saw their Schaffers. so what is a schaffer? it is a squashed round wood object with two legs. A South Australian company called www.screamdance.com created a competition for aboriginal artists to make a group of schaffers for an art exhibition and for sale to help the close the gap cause.

They held their first sale last June.

So I started playing and created Smirks .. who are very smirky. "smirky smirks" they make you smile. they are made of clay or sawdust and glue, or wood or food, whatever ..

a similar flattened ball with legs.

They spark the imagination. and ignite creativity. and these could create quite a cash cow for a deserving charity.
Something black and white fellas can make and contribute.

So here are some of my Smirky-Smirks. Here' a few pics.

NB Because a smirky smirk is made of 3 components (a squashed round body with two legs). They seemed to naturally lend themselves to look like stonehenge. No doubt in their evolution they will become more sophisticated.. more elegant. more socially acceptable.
But right now , Smirky smirks are still in miniature and somewhat restricted by their basic form... They have a job to do.. and that is to make us smile.. I hope they make you smile too. these are all in 1:12 scale

BUT they are great little actors, and respond so well to photography!
